While I have the head off questions

Postby KRB64 » Wed May 02, 2012 3:06 am

While the head is off and the radiator is out I plan on replacing as much as I can since some stuff is 20 years old now.

OEM Radiator is OK, but scaly inside and some green staining in one corner so I just plan on a NAPA unless somebody has a better idea? No radiator shop around anymore...

I've been told the original rad hoses are silicone and to just keep and reuse them. What about my tranny heater hoses? Theres a few of the same 90* pieces that the cab heater hose has. While everything was out of the way I though I'd do them too. Are they silicone as well?

My plan to replace with new:
head gasket (complete kit, stock thickness)
water pump
thermostat
head bolts
manifold bolts/gaskets
belt
and kill the dowel pin if its not dead already

Any suggestions on what else I need to consider replacing while this whole mess is apart? Most everything is 10+ years old. I have no free money to upgrade but hate to have it all torn down only to have to dig back in in a couple months/years for R&R.

Thanks folks,

The radiator hoses are not silicone as far as I know. The only two hoses that are are the two that come out of the heater core. They're black with a green lining inside of them.

The rest of your list looks pretty good except for the manifold gaskets. If you've got the factory manifold it may have shrunk over the years and it will make the outside bolts impossible to get back in. About the only cure for that is to get a new manifold, which isn't a bad thing if yours is shrunk. it'll pull the mounting ears off the head after it gets so bad.

If the manifold doesn't look too shrunk, I wouldn't touch it.

My 93 heater hoses are silicone. Their black on the outside with an orange-ish inside.
The lower radiator hose looked the same but the upper didn't. Its regular old hose. So I don't know if their suppose to be or not.
If your doing the KDP anyhow you could jump a tooth on the pump gear.

Ellis, he's mostly stock with minor upgrades. A tooth bump won't really be needed on his truck.
I wouldn't replace the head bolts unless they don't fit the stretch gauge. You may get one in the headgasket set, or borrow one someplace. No use replacing them if they are good.
While you are doing the KDP, remove and loctite the case bolts. 2 are under the cam gear, IIRC,1 comes out, the other just torque what you can because it won't. You may have to bend a wrench to get on it, 10mm.
I'm on the fence about the waterpump. It's easy to change if it goes, but if you do road trips you might better do it to prevent problems on the road.
Mine is original w/ 223k on it. ;)

Well I just seen were he had the timing bumped now and if he upgraded in the future he'd have the extra timing.
I jumped the tooth and lined the marks back up on the pump and cover.
