1. Welcome :D
2. Turbo and cheap cannot go in the same sentence. I think that an HE351CW would be the best compromise. I'm sure you have the fuel to spool a 62/65/14 S300, but those are over $1000. I think an HE351 is 60/60/9. A Super40 is under a grand and it's a good upgrade too. By pulling to you mean sled or trailer? That could make a difference

Depends on the exhaust housing, from what I read,if its a 16 then it'll do well.

There's tons of variations of HX40 and the Super 40 is the best. It is 60/65?/16. The exhaust housing is gated and the compressor wheel has 7 blades, that's how you'll identify it. The P/N is floating around here somewhere. You'll hear that HX40s are weak and like to break shafts, but for the price and the amount of air they move, they're pretty nice

That is only on p-pump trucks or heavilied over fueled trucks.

The HX40 is a decent turbo, but found it lacking.

Been too long, but if you can get at the wastegate and drill the divider out so it can 'gate all 6, that will help a lot. They are very laggy, even on an auto.

A 351CW with an external wastegate would be a nice setup. The 9 housing will choke the motor too easy. Drilling the wastegate hole out bigger will help. Just not sure how well it will flow, vs an external gate.

I'm rebuilding an H1-C w/ wastegated 12cm exhaust housing and upgrading to a 60mm compressor wheel and housing kit (Gillett Diesel). Will have about $400 into it, should be a good value option. Has anyone used a 351 with a controller on a 1st gen? Does the exhaust brake feature work with a Fleece controller on our trucks?

The controller needs input from sensors we don't have so no.

I'm sure you could make the '40 work on most any truck, but they don't like to be barked. Since your truck is a stick, it getting barked between every gear during a hard run might be rough on it. Just some common sense in how you treat it would probably keep it alive regardless.

I'd still +1 the 351 though. Hog the 'gate out and get it venting all 6 and I bet it's just about a perfect turbo for our trucks. Plus they seem to be pretty good in twin sets if you ever decide to take that step.
