Timing Cover Suggestions

Postby W350Eddie » Thu Oct 04, 2012 1:14 pm

I'm going to be replacing the timing cover gasket and the front main seal this weekend, and wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions as to how to get this done as quickly/easily as possible? obviously my dual electric fans have to come off, but do i need to pull the radiator?
Thanks in advance.

It's not required to pull the radiator. It just depends on how nimble your hands are. It sure would be easier to pull everything off, but it takes alot of time. If I were to do it, I would leave the radiator in.

When I did mine I pulled everything off. Remember back on how many times we have all tried to take shortcuts by not removing something and later struggle and struggle and end up taking longer.

I did mine it took probably 4 hours total. But keep in mind I have a 3" body lift so the harmonic balancer is not easy to get to anymore.

I'm jumping a tooth of timing tomorrow with help from stackx2. We are going to leave the radiator in. Hopefully I can get most of my oil leaks stopped with a tappet cover, timing cover, gasket and front seal replacement. Good luck to you. I'll post on here if I find anything to give a heads up on.

I've never pulled the radiator or shroud out to pull a timing case cover. Plus, I can get the fan out, without pulling the upper radiator hose off either.I did pull the fan hub off the last time, but that is because the bearing was bad.

Fuel injection pump and lift pump will need to come off, to get the tappet cover off. To get the rear IP braket loose, it is easiest to pull the 2 bolts holding the vac/ps pump, and set it on the frame rain (no need to pull lines off). The lower one is a PITA. Both bolts take a 10mm wrench. As long as the crank NEVER gets turned with the fuel injection pump off, you won't have to retime the engine. Has a keyed shaft.

Well we got it done 6 hours for everything. Engine sounds the same even though we swear we jumped a tooth.

Well it seems to run a little better. I rolled on the throttle half way through first with the ksb on. As soon as it lit the tires broke free! When it shift to second it barked the tires twice and flat out moved. We got to 60mph real quick. It just doesn't sound any different. With the ksb off. I swore I read somewhere that jumping a tooth is like 10degrees of timing. Well on the light the truck was at 14 ksb off, 21 ksb on. So I though with my basic math that jumping a tooth and putting the pump back to where it was would net me 24 with the ksb off and 31 ksb on. Just basic math. Hope I did it right.
