Cummins Knock question.

Postby Ilikecummins » Thu Oct 25, 2012 5:52 pm

Hello, i am Buying a 1989 cummins with a 1992 5.9 intercooled cummins. The owner said that he drove it from work and started next morning and there is a knock. He said it is the Thrust bearing and it would take a couple hours to Replace them. i am new to owning a cummins and have wanted one and want to know if 3500 Dollers is a good Deal? the motor has 133k miles and is all stock. also are the thrust bearings easy to Replace?

Also what does the knock sound like for thrust bearing? Give your best explanation. Thanks

A knock would more readily come from a spun rod or main bearing.

Excessive fuel injection pump timing can.

Does the truck have a manual trans? If it does, does the noise go away when the clutch is disengaged? How easy is it to put the truck into gear after the pedal is pressed down? Get a pry bay and try to wiggle the crank back and forth (end to end). If it moves to much, then the thrust bearing is junk. Never done one in a B series Cummins before. The pan will most likely have to come off to replace it.

Check the oil pressure with a manual gauge. There is an extra plug on top of the oil filter base, next to the turbo oil feed line.
