missing and surging

Postby VanillaGorilla » Wed Oct 31, 2012 5:30 pm

So the other night driving home my truck randomly developed a miss and lost power for a split second. First thing I did was change the fuel filter and once restarted same problem. A few people told me that the lift pump was probably bad. So I threw on a Holley pump I had and ran 3/8 line. Unfortunately it still does the same thing. So with it idling I cracked each injector line waiting to hear one nit make a difference in the idle but each time it had an effect. So by what I've been told the injectors should be okay.
At idle I can hear a miss. While driving I can just barely feel it in the pedal. Come to a stop and it pulses real bad and surges and tries to push through the converter. Any ideas guys?

Sounds like something's up with the pump to me. Are you a memeber of the pull cable club?

Checked that, even swapped in a good one that I had as a spair and got the same result. The plunger on the FSS that came out of it looks fine so it's not deteriorating and getting into the pump. I'm scared I'm running out of simple fixes. Honestly if it's the pump, once it's rebuilt this truck is for sale. I love it but when it breaks down it takes forever to diagnose and even the Cummins dealer doesn't know where to find parts. Wuth my daily commute it's too hard to borrow a vehicle I can run 130 miles a day.

Hard time finding engine parts? I think you may need a new dealer

fuel heater used to suck air, deleted it last year (can't believe I was able to get the delete stud lol) Cannot find any place it is sucking air and I think the miss is too consistent to be air. Starting to think maybe a delivery valve went to hell. Have it at a guys place that is much smarter than me and he's checking through things. Hate to admit it but the Duramax is yet to miss a beat and has twice the power (face in palm shaking head)

And when the Dmax breaks it'll cost four times as much to fix, better think about that "old" dodge alittle harder ;) . Your just catching the years of abuses toll, once you work thru them it'll be a good truck.

Get some sleep and have a fresh mind and think about it... i would get a clean gas jug fill with diesel... put a barb fitting on ip and run small line from jug to IP ....which im assuming you can hear miss at idle.. rule out the sucking in air theory

Head and Rotor control springs.
Actually, I mis spoke, they are rotor control springs, bad habit on my part.
These have broken and can cause the pump to function erratically.

A friend is tearing the pump down, looks like it will be getting a rebuild, or if the price of parts gets to a certain point I've been offered a P pump, stainless lines, and timing cover for $600. Good deal I assume. . . would add to resale or light a fire under me to take it to the next level, who knows what I'll do lol
