inj pump problems

Got a 1990 cummins. The injection pump was leaking from every possible place on it. So I got a rebuilt pump with 3200 gov spring and turned up. So the guy who's putting it on said the keyway gear into the timing cover was stripped. Hoping to have it back Friday. Now its gonna take even longer. I just got this truck and can't even play with it because all the problems. :evil:

Can you be a little more clear on that? It doesn't really make sense, the key way in the gear? Or something on the timing cover is stripped?

Okay. You know the keyway on the injection pump that goes in the timing cover? The gear that the keyway lines up with is stripped.

Ok, that makes more sense. If the keyway is messed up you need a new (or used) gear, no way around it. If the key isn't tight the gear will move and eat up the shaft on the pump. The gear may be cracked too, seen several of them this summer on here.

Okay. Luckily he caught it before. The gear on the pump and keyway are fine. I went to his house and seen it is cracked. So he is gonna go get one off another motor. He said he was gonna go ahead and get a dowel pin too. What is that. I've heard a bunch about them but not sure what it is.

It's the pin that lines the timing case up with the block. They work loose and fall down into the gears. If you are lucky it just breaks the case when it falls.

Have him make a tab or use a punch around the dowel pin hole on the timing case so it can't work out. Make sure while you are in there to remove the case to block bolts and clean and Loctite them in. They like to fall out too, more often than the dowel pin on our trucks.
