Quiet Cummins??

Postby Arnold Layne » Sun Feb 03, 2013 8:58 am

I have to admit that I'm just fooling around (read shamelessly knocking up my post count) until I can get this truck unloaded and drive it some. It's a '90 model and it doesn't make nearly as much racket as my '92, or my '98 for that matter. It's pretty quiet and smooth sounding like (dare I say it) a V-8. Starts easy and seems to run and pull right, no abnormal smoke. Are the non-I/C motors a little quieter or is it possible my pump has slipped back a couple degrees? Thanks!

The 93 I have was REALLY quiet too. My 92, 97 and 99 were a lot noisier. But, when I replaced the headgasket, I did the 1/8" timing bump. Sounds like a "real" diesel now.

If the nuts holding the fuel injection pump to the timing case are a plenty loose, the timing could slip. But, they'd have to be pretty loose. The high pressure lines are really stiff, so they would help prevent the pump from twisting.

Probably some wear in the gear, and pump that relate to timing.... it's probably running a few degrees retarded from stock.

Mine has a reman VE pump, but could be they didn't back the crank off, and bring it back to take any gear lash out of it.

They time the pump when it's on the bench.... they usually just go off the stock marks to time the engine agian.

There are internal things inside the pump that can wear overtime and throw the actual even timing off a little bit as well.
