The 93 I have was REALLY quiet too. My 92, 97 and 99 were a lot noisier. But, when I replaced the headgasket, I did the 1/8" timing bump. Sounds like a "real" diesel now.
If the nuts holding the fuel injection pump to the timing case are a plenty loose, the timing could slip. But, they'd have to be pretty loose. The high pressure lines are really stiff, so they would help prevent the pump from twisting.
