removing the vac pump

Postby artieb » Tue Oct 08, 2013 11:02 am

Hi, while at SOP, Bill couldn't get the wrench on the IP nut, the hidden one, the one that is about 4 oclock on the IP. The nut and stud was missing. I have been trying to replace it and can not get the stud started. I could remove the IP and everything, OR, if memory serves me, the 2 big bolts on the vacuum / power steering pump, could be removed and slide the assembly out, and I could get at that stud? Am I thinking right? Artie

Artie, are you sure the stud isn't broken off in the hole? May want to use a small screwdriver or something and check that 1st.
2nd, try using a mirror and make sure the hole is centered in the pump slot. It shouldn't drop because of the front lip on the pump, but the hole may be off a little from the slot.
Removing the pumps combo will give you more room.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks Pete. Is the hole blind or does the threaded boss go into the gear case? There is no oil leaking. I tried a mirror and light, and a piece of wire with no luck. I'll try it in the dark again with the light.
Thanks again Artie

Broken stud, fummins, not me. I have 2 good IP flange studs and a good rear brace. I'm not going to worry about it. When the IP is removed I will be able to grab him and replace. Thanks Pete

When you said the stud wouldn't go it that was my 1st thought, sorry Artie! ;) The good news is when you do decide to do it, it should come out fairly easily, unless some mechtard loctited it in there. And the stud hole is drilled thru the case, you can see them from the front if the gear is off.
It should be alright because you have the rear bracket, if you didn't, you would have problems from the vibration.
