School me on lift pumps

Postby theoldmanW350 » Thu Jun 19, 2014 11:49 am

Hey guys the next upgrade I'd like to give the old man is a LPHV lift pump because, simply put, most seem to go that direction. But I don't really understand why. Is it worthwhile because it will support a higher HP#? I'm running stock fuel but I do have slightly higher HP injectors. Or is it because they flow more consistent PSI/GPM? I think I'm throwing out the correct acronyms. I then found this article:
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=10020

I haven't installed a 3200 spring yet, but it is on my list. With a higher RPM range it seems prudent to increase the size of the fuel lines as well to keep the efficiency of the LP up. I'm not sure if I'm over thinking this. I'd just like to make sure I'm not simply throwing parts on without understanding the reasoning first. Thanks.

The advantages of the high volume piston lift pump.... 1. way more fuel than stock, and more fuel than other piston pumps...therefore can support later mods. 2. a very reliable design. 3. doesn't rupture and fill the crankcase like the factory diaphragm pumps CAN do.

As far as the rest of the system.... with mild mods, there is no reason to start upgrading and trying to keep things efficient. It doesn't hurt, but isn't necessary with a piston lift pump upgrade.

Oh, and your link didn't come through right... not sure what thread that is referring to.

This can't be that hard to insert a link. Hope this works.

And RC, I figured you'd be one of the first replies. I am looking to buy your kit. Will I have to turn the fuel screw in a bit with this upgrade? Is the 15psi pump the one to get or the 12? Thanks for your help on this so far.

You can run the injection pump just how it is... no need to change the settings. I have stopped offering the 12 psi kit (one can get a 12 psi kit with special request though). As the 15 psi kit works totally fine on completely stock trucks... and still have a little more volume for one wants to go with decently sized injectors.

Hey RC I just received my kit in the mail, and I'm anxious to install it. I've run across a mod regarding the fuel line banjo bolt on the case. Some have drilled the holes out to 3/16" then ground down the bolt. I'm all for reducing restrictions whether it be air intake/outtake or fuel. Thoughts on drilling?

Not a bad thing to do... I can honestly say I didn't notice a thing when going with larger banjo bolts.

Ok. Got another question. I'm following a piston pump install guide over on DTR by bc847. http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/piston-lift-pump-install-t93722.html?t=93722
He used liquid pipe thread on the fitting going into the pump but cautioned against using it on the fuel side. Aren't both sides the fuel side? Thanks for following me on this.

Technically yes, BUT the inlet side is NPT, and the outlet side is a self sealing fit, no thread sealer required.

Got it. I noticed the self sealing fit on the outlet. Appreciate the info.
