What did I do?

Postby 90chum » Tue Sep 02, 2014 8:31 am

So after finally getting my 47rh swap done, I thought my truck would be mechanically safe for a while. I was taking my buddy for a rip-run and as we were coming back, it sounded kinda odd, then I stopped and realized it had a definate miss. I pulled all the rocker covers and saw them all moving as they should, and noticed it was chuffing out the intake, sure enough it was sucking and blowing out the turbo in time with the miss. Also all pushrods are straight. And deduced it is #1 cylinder. I have been told I either bent or burnt the valve. I'm confused how I could have done either as it happened while driving and I had the head off like 2yrs ago n put 60# springs and head studs in it and it only has a 3200 gov spring. Btw a built 47rh makes it a whole different truck.

Crack the injectors and see if one doesn't change the miss.

Also, 60lbs are no guarantee that it won't have valve lift. 60lbs more seat but not much more than stock at certain lift that I can't remember. You need 165# springs if you're running high boost or rpm.

I'm not really running high boost (30-35psi) or high rpm unless my 3200 spring is messed up, but i wouldn't expect to see that via the auto except if i forget to shift 4th/OD, but i know its been against the governor before the trans swap  but i guess ill find out this weekend i hope to pull the head

I assume you looked but you didn't mention it, did your lash adjusters back off?

I ran my valves and had the same cylinder's exhaust valve back off twice on me. Nothing catastrophic happened, but it'll chuff out the intake if the exhaust valve isn't opening.

Very upsetting night Friday. Pulled the head and gasket is blown between 4&5, 4 had a slimey black lake in it and all pistons have small shiny flakes on them and 3 has a small barely feel able groove on back side. The head was decked like 2 or 3 years ago and used felpro gasket

Check the turbo close and make sure it's not hitting to see if the flakes came from there.

Ahh man that sucks...sorry to hear that things went south on you. And that's a kick in the pants too when you try and do everything the "right" way, and things still fail. :(

I think I would have been a lot more upset if I pulled the head and the gasket looked perfect. Then I'd still not have found the problem...and just created a new one. Progress is a good thing...you found it! Congrats.

So i went to the engine machining department at my college, talked to a prof for like 1/2 hour about how to measure the head and block, he looked up specs for it, which the overall for the block is either .003 or .004, cant remember off hand but it's written on the paper from him, but it said the overall/side-to-side for the head is .012? that sounds way too sloppy in my opinion. Provided the block is good, or close, can the allowed warpage be a bit larger if i get the head o-ringed or will that not effect how tight the flatness needs to be?

I only paid 35 dollars to get my head milled flat, valves vacuum tested, and checked for cracks. Might as well do it and avoid any chance of coolant leakage. I think your head gasket will last longer in the long run with a flat head.

You can't o ring a head unless it is perfectly flat, plus that runs about $250.

To have a shop go through your head should run about $150.

Forgot to mention when I got the head back it was absolutely spotless, like wipe your new white shirt on it, and not leave a mark. That alone made it worth it for what I paid.

Finally got time to check my block this weekend, it's good to go :D. As i was logging on i called the local diesel shop and asked about a deck and o-ring job...$140! forgot to ask about a gasket, but ill talk about that when i take it. just ground the valves n seats when i had it off 2 or 3 years ago but plan to check them when i take it all apart.

A head gasket is about $100, a little over or under, depending on where and what oversize you need.

Please excuse my possible ignorance, but is the oversize for the cylinder size or the gasket thickness, was unsure when I did this before so just used a std one. My head had .013 taken off the last time, and the head shop said they would most likely have to take a little off to o-ring it, so if it is thickness should i go thicker? Lastly what brand of gasket is recommended, i just used a felpro because its what napa had...
