zink additive in shell rotella T ????

Postby jethro » Wed Dec 17, 2014 10:47 pm

I have filled my engine (on the stand) with Rotella T. ( I ran it about 6 hours on cheap auto parts store oil and dumped it
to help clean inside of engine- then new rotella T with new filter)

I have been reading about the possible role of zink in the protection of flat tappet engines.

Is the consensus here that a zink additive like ZDD or Redline is a good idea when using Rotella T ?
It appears that Rotella T does have a moderate amount of zink......

There seems to be a lot of difference of opinion in places about this.......

I really just guessed that Rotella T is an OK oil for 5.9 ---------- opinions ?

We ran a zinc additive in our tractor engine for the safety factor. It's like chicken soup it can't hurt. I used a Lucas product from jegs with a 50 wt valvoline racing oil.

If the oil is rated CI it has Zinc, if it is CJ it doesn't. TDR had several nice articles about oils and additives.

I have been reading more since the last post that Rotella T is one of the oils that the hot rodders and antiquers go to
when they want to run oil that has the concentrations of zinc from 20 years ago. So it appears that Rotella t had a
more or less suitable amount of zinc. From what I have read most claim that above 1600 PPM (about) the zinc becomes counterproductive and can lead to surface defects and failures.

From what I have read about cam break-in in gassers- stronger valve springs tend to aggravate the break-in lubrication.
I am not breaking in a new cam- but I will be putting in 60# valve springs. Would this mean I should add zinc to get it up to
the 1600 PPM limit because of the increased pressure from the stouter spring ?

OR- are slow-reving diesel springs actually weaker than a comparatively similar sized gas engine due to the huge maximum RPM differences ? Cummins springs look way thinner than the springs on a Lycoming O-235 I had apart a while back .......

What say ye ?

A new head from Cummins will be equipped with 60lb springs from the factory, on the exhaust valves, in case the application has an exhaust brake. They're just a factory of a spring as the weenie springs are, run your oil. :)

I suspect she isn't done with my wallet yet either ! I expect "down the road" she will whine for better injectors and
