Salvage IP installed EGTs skyrocket

Postby ESC93W350 » Mon Feb 23, 2015 10:28 am

Had to replace my IP after running 12gal of Super unleaded 168miles.
The new pump has been gotten into, yellow paint marks on all screws, fuel pin marked an rotated, etc.
My question is, could the timing being off cause some white smoke at startup with a little roughness, and my EGTs hit 1000* pretty quick without a load?
I ran a mile and back and noticed at WOT EGT climbed fast, once it hit governor and started defueling Why's started dropping.

Any insight or suggestions are appreciated.

White smoke and wanting to sputter tells me that timing needs to be looked at.

I would guess retarded timing. I would bump it to the head and see if that helps.

I've also noticed my idle egt has dropped about 100*.
Any ideas on this? Also timing related?

Thanks,
Eric

I would say timing related as well. I'd speculate that with retarded timing and fuel being injected so close to tdc, your pyro is more sensitive to fueling. Still burning as it is being exhausted. So little fuel at idle that less residual heat build up in the combustion chamber leading to lower idle egt. Then when you dump fuel to it, you are pushing fire out the exhaust valves heating up the pyro quickly. At least that's my guess, from the info you've given.

What remps said.... It may not be timing, but that's the first place I'd look

It's timing....I'm almost certain. I bet the pump key is cut in half. BTDT more than once.

I was leaning towards timing also because the salvage pump has the tab, where the timing mark Belongs, busted off. So going to have to make new marks and go from there.
Thanks.

Tried to turn pump, didn't work. What am I missing? I loosened the 3 nuts, and the one 10mm bolt on the plate. What am I missing?
Thanks for any direction.

I've always put a ratchet strap on the pump top to put some tension on it, then hold a wood block to the pump top and give it a few love taps with a hammer. If you are going to move the pump a lot, it couldn't hurt to crack the lines loose at the back of the pump. I never bothered to myself though.

The pump top, being where the fuel pin is housed? I tried love tapping the plate on the back that the 10mm bolt goes through, guess I need to apply more love.lol

Yep just hook it to the pump top and put a little tension on it, pulling it towards the cylinder head, and give it a few whacks. It should move. If that doesn't work, I'd find the issue before trying hitting it too hard.
