Hmmmmm.....racy engine and gunk cooling?

Postby 284 » Wed Sep 03, 2008 6:18 pm

Seems like I have two things going on...may be unrelated.

When I first got this truck from the slug that owned it, I replaced the fuel filter and it had waste in it. IIRC, I posted a pic here. New oil, etc.

My eingine temp seems to fluxuate more than normal, but hotter than my other 91 I had. In my p*ke tank, I've found some sediment, greasy. I popped open my radiator and found that greasy residue on the bottom of the cap.

Secondly...and may be unrelated...

Just put 1K miles on it in 24 hours. Now, I have a very very high idle.
I've noticed a lot of unburned fuel upon start up due to a dark brown cloud. Also, I can sometimes see whiteish smoke coming out of the clear plastic oil tube coming out and down by the oil pan onto the ground.

So gentlemen and women...Any ideas what the heck is going on? I'm far from home at the moment, so am wondering what's in store. Long walk with so many tools.

Thanks.

greasy residue in your radiator is usually a sign of a blown head gasket, witch would also cause your fluctuating engine temps. Check the oil, if it's milky looking you definitely have a blown head gasket.

I'm not sure what would cause the new found high idle, unless the idle screw is loose and moving? The smoke on start up is normal, as long as it's a blackish gray. When you start the truck the injection pump gives the engine full fuel, as if it was at full throttle momentarily. I think this is to aid in starting.

The smoke from the oil tube is just a little bit of blow bye in the form of oil mist. My truck usually does a little of that after I run at high rpm's, like on the freeway.

Hope some of that helped.

If the oil looks good, you probably have a bad oil cooler.

Thanks for the input guys.
The oil looks OK, not milky. I dreaded the blown head gasket too, but that didn't make sense w/good oil.

I didn't know I had an oil cooler. That would prolly explain it. The radiator, IC, and tranny cooler, and now an oil cooler? My grill must look like a homer simpson sandwich.

I'll check on something loose this afternoon or tomorrow. I'm in WI now and its raining--something rare in CO.

Once again, thanks a lot guys.

It's inside the block behind the oil filter mount.

I have an oil cooler inside the block?
How in heck do I access it? Still raining out, so I've not gone out to check it out. Should end this evening.

I'm searching on the net to try and find out more about this cooler.

Where in CO ya from? I'm from denver.

'Bout 25mi. north. If you search in DTR you'll find a couple long threads about oil coolers. Flash had one and I believe a kid going by uh, started with an "S" I forget. Anyway, there's usually two ways oil gets in the water: HG or oil cooler. HG also can go both ways (water in oil). Not saying you have a bad oil cooler, but I'd strongly suspect it. I never took mine apart yet, but there's a big cover that forms the oil filter head hiding it right on the pass side of the block. You would probably want to pressure test that somehow before tearing it apart. They can be tricky to get sealed back up after replacement, big flat gasket.

The higher idle could be the low idle screw if it does loosen up it will vibrate in causing a higher idle. Mine did that till I removed it. ;-)

right now I'm in madison. I'm doing a house for a relative and will be gone back to CO next week. I grew up in WI< so I'm spoiled on the fishing and hunting. I keep telling my GF that colorado sucks in those departments, but she does neither, so doesn't understand.

that prolly explains the high idle then because my tranny fluid lines are rattling.

Stopped raining now and I have my own computer up, so I'll check out where things are on the net, then go turn some wrenches and/or use my demo hammer adjustmenter.
