Question on timing ( 89 non i/c )

Postby Richie O » Thu Oct 02, 2008 4:01 pm

Did the timing thing. I went atleast an 1/8th maybe 3/16ths but not to the head. How do you know if you went to far? I know the non i/c has a little more timing than the i/c trucks had already. I have my stock 9mm injectors and am getting lots of fuel from them. Should I stick to just 1/8th and no more? I have read all the timing threads but everybody has different combos so its hard to go with just one figure. Thanks :D

Run it for a while, then move it again and see how it is. Just mark where it is now so you can go back, some or all, if you want.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I just kept moving the pump to the head a bit at a time. I would drive it a day or two between each movement to see if I liked it. Eventually the pump was against the head. My truck liked lots of timing and really does now. If the truck starts to feel doggy or just not as powerfull/crisp then move it back to your last setting. I cant see you hurting anything unless you slam it to the head and dump in a lot of hot water/meth while towing heavy. These truck are tough so play a little and see how you like it.

Are they supposed to get louder with advanced timing? Sounds more like a 3126 cat now. Seems to have good power. Cold idle is alittle rough but smooths out after ksb warms up.

If it sounds like a 3126, you've gone far enough  . I'd borrow a gauge and mark a few places (my truck has 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8mm marked on either the pump flange or timing case.) This way, you can do it only once, and then you know where you are moving it.

So the guys that are going to the head or even advancing a tooth must have different injectors or something cause I still have more room to advance it before it hits the head. I don't think I will push any more advance. So If I did borrow a timing tool where should I run It?
