Sounds like the fuel shutoff solenoid may have gone south on you. If they go out, the truck will die like you turned the switch off. If you cycle the ignition switch on and off you should be able to fel the solenoid cycle. If it is out, you can get the truck home by pulling the solenoid off and removing the plunger and spring. Put the solenoid housing back on and see if the truck will start. If it does, the way to turn the motor off is to use the shutoff lever on hte side of the pump.
This is a common problem with these trucks.
