Gauge trouble????

Postby deanhinsley1963 » Fri May 08, 2009 2:17 pm

I just installed my gauges,I had them used,I checked the pyro. with a AA bat. and it pegged out which should mean its OK? I had new probe think it could be bad? gauge does'nt move except when starting then goes back to 0 and stays there. Also installed boost gauge with 1/4 line and only have 10psi. at full throttle is'nt this awfull low? Pump is stock, but still?,runs fine though but not very strong was wondering about stock lift pump. Would this cause this? Sorry about long post but confused. THanks for all replys.

10psi for a stock, automatic, intercooled truck sounds about right.

10psi is low, even for a stock automatic. 13-15 is average, in my experience, and I've had gauges of one sort or another in 8 of my 10 1stGens.

WHat brand of gauges do you have? You may have cooked something internal in the pyro with the AA battery, maybe not.

The pyro gauge&the probe are isspro. The AA bat. is only 1.5 volt what do you think?

An AA battery is going to output a whole order of magnitude more current/ voltage than a thermocouple. I think that a type K outputs a max of around .050 volts. Millivolts at any rate. I'm sure that 1.5 volts is not what the designer would recommend to test it.

Find another thermocouple reader to check your thermocouple, find another thermocouple to check your thermocouple reader. Could be easier said than done; I have a little hand-held reader, a lot of meters have thermocouple ports. Type K is very common. If you can find "thermocouple wire", you can twist it together to make your own thermocouple.
