What to look for...

Postby tivoklr » Fri May 22, 2009 9:33 am

I'm looking at a 1991 D250 4x4 with 212,000 miles on it tonight. It has an automatic tranny. Owned by a diesel mechanic, has had a bunch of front end work done recently.

What should I be looking at when checking out this vehicle. I'm not a diesel truck guy but a diesel car guy, so I have some idea what I'm getting into, but as this is not a VW I don't know the particulars of where it might have weaknesses.

The owner wants 4500 for it but it does come with a plow which is a major selling point for me. The owner didn't use it to plow commercially, just his driveway, which is what I'll be using it for in the future.

Thanks!

What all are you planning on doing with the truck. If you plan on doing any towing find out if it still has the stock torque converter (TC) in it. If so you might want to upgrade that if you purchace it which is kind of pricy. If you are not going to do any towing and dont want to make a drag truck out of it the stock TC will be fine.

You can also check to see if it is intercooled or not that year they made both (they switched half way through the year). Again depending on what you want to do with the truck which one is better... I personally don't see the harm in either one if you are going to keep it fairly stock. Mine is non-intercooled and I get along fine with it.

Check the frame around the fuel tank, I have heard that this is a problem area for these trucks.

If the guy was a diesel mechanic I have to assume the he took care of the truck... but time will tell I guess.

By the way a 4x4 will be a W250 not a D250.
1990 W350 4X4 NOW INTERCOOLED 5-speed. Boost/Pyro. Few light tweaks to the pump. Now a dually with an aluminum flatbed!!
