Injector Shims?

Postby Begle1 » Mon Jun 01, 2009 1:45 pm

I pop tested my injectors, they range from 2,500 PSI to 2,900 PSI; spec is 3,550 PSI?

Anybody know where I can get shims? Any reason why not to use hardware store washers and beer can holes?

I found a hole puncher the right size, how important is it that I put holes in the middle of the beer can circles?

I imagine that I want to use stainless washers?

I went to Ace with a caliper, turns out that "3 mm flat washers" are the exact same diameter (by my standards) as the shims that were in the injector. So I got 25 of those. I'll see how that works tomorrow...

I imagine that it is possible to get coil bind by using too many shims? I would hope that if that were to happen I'd notice it on the pop tester?

i found that 5mm washers work perfectly for vw injectors , then it's just a matter of using a set of calipers to hunt for the right combination of washers to give you the preload your looking for .

i know of a few vw engines that i have built injectors for that are aproaching 50,000km and the owners are still loving what i did .

i pulled one injector out of my car with 12,000 km , just to check out how the washers held up , and they look just like the day i assembled them .

i wouldn't worry or hesitate to use steel washers , just make sure there isn't anything " peeling " off of them , like some sort of cheap plating .

Well, I used the 3mm flat washers to shim all the injectors to within 10 BAR of 245 BAR. There was enough natural variation in the thickness of the washers, on top of the shims in the injectors already, that I was able to mix-and-match with quite a bit of variety.

If anything goes too wrong I'll be sure to share.
