head difference?

Postby redneckroot » Wed Jun 17, 2009 9:24 am

I am wanting to keep my eye out for an intercooled head to send and get fire ringed. But what I want to know is what is the difference between a 91.5-93 head and a 94-98.5 head? Is there any? Better worse? Which would you guys pick? What are they worth?

i know a truck place that that they work on big rigs and have like a junk yard and new sales. they sell rebuilt heads or diffrent years cheap enough that if i ever had one done i would go there. it like $500 or so for a bare head and like $800 for a head with valves.

the only big difference is between non i/c head vs i/c head. non i/c have 9mm injector bore AND the valve bowl area behind the valves has more casting down lower on the guide area. looks clearly more restricive the i/c heads. any i/c head will wrk fine. when i compared a p-pumped vs non i/c vs i/c the pumped and i/c looked about the same.

Almost every Cummins B-series head with over 10,000 miles on it is cracked. Most people who say that their heads aren't cracked don't understand the process of magnafluxing. Very rarely are the cracks a problem.

i can tell you from workin at an engine shop that cracks are VERY common on cummins heads. cummins actually has an exceptable crack. so its not big deal.

i was told the usa castings are the best, british 2nd, brazil 3rd, mexico, then china in order from highest quality to lowest quality. i dont know how much difference there is but i know mine is a usa cast head and was in good shape when i had it magnafluzed, resurfaced and o ringed. that seems like a decent deal though

I ran a head on my nonIC 01 that had 7 cracks in it. Guy at the machine shop said he'd seen them run much bigger cracks in Case tractors, so I ran it in my pickup, no problems that I knew of.

Rumbelfish's head has no cracks- even magnafluxed it to be sure.

I have read that an IC head is an IC head, no matter if it's a 91 or a 97.
