Foolish to use only suction-side filtration?

Postby Begle1 » Wed Jul 08, 2009 6:55 pm

It's ten times cleaner for me to mount my filter on the suction side than the pressure side.

Should I be scared to only run a 10 micron suction-side filter/ water-seperator and no pressure-side filter? Several stock set-ups do that, but they all went to pressure-side set-ups due to transfer pump debris problems...

Anybody ever see a little 25/30-micron in-line filter that I can plumb on the pressure-side right before the injection pump in case the lift pump or fuel cooler comes apart?

No, but I used this one - it's 10um. Nominal.

I don't plan on changing it for a few years. There's a guy selling them on eBay for $35 + s&h. I'm sure you could run this alone and never have any issues if you're careful about water and additives. But I also run a 5um w/water seperator can after the LP, just to be on the safe side:

In what way? Accessibility?

My preference is to use a courser filter on the suction side to protect the fuel pump, then a finer one on the pressure side to protect the injection pump. I do all my filling from a 75 gallon transfer tank so I can mis my "brew" before filling the tank on the truck. Not an "in line" filter, but accomplishes the same thing. My transfer tank pump has a 50 micron filter on it. The truck has a standard "?" micron filter.
The problems I've encountered with a suction side filter is keeping it from sucking air, That is why I use the transfer method.

I've been running my big rig suction-side filter for going on a year now and never any air sucking problems. Once recebtly ater re-filling the bed tank I forgot to reset the selector valve on that tank and it ran for over two minutes until pressure dropped to around 5psi and held there while the pump cavitated until I found a spot to pull over and correct my mistake. Engine never even sputtered, and I don't think a drop of air entered the system. It would have quit eventually, but having about two gallons of fuel in the filters and lines makes it a little more forgiving under those circumstances.

Air can enter the lines regardless of the filter configuration. Avoiding that is just a matter of having good, tight plumbing connections.

My major concern regarding only having a suction side filter is having debris from the lift pump get into the injection pump.
