How not to pull injectors

Postby bgilbert » Wed Jul 08, 2009 4:55 pm

Ok for all you jokers out there that remove/pull injectors from the cylinder head with VICE GRIPS, this rant is for you! No more vice grips!! I'm tired of getting all set to install a new set of edm's or rebuilt injectors etc and then having to file down the burrs on the injector body because the previous joker pulled them with vice grips. This is the second set I've done that most or all of the bodies were chewed up and required a few minutes a piece with the file. So then you gotta spray them down ether or brake clean, then hit with air. I'm over it!

Build an injector puller for petes sake! Ten inch piece of all thread, proper metric nut welded to the all thread, some nuts, some washers and a hammer head or large socket are all thats needed for a cheap effective puller.

Don't build a puller for my sake, do it for Bill!
Bill, just clean them up with a 4" hand grinder. The next guy you sell them to will appreciate it.
Pay it forward! ;)

Has anybody ever not been able to get injectors out just by cranking the engine?

I don't see why that isn't a more popular method.

If you set the hold down nut on the top of the injector, then put a deep well socket on it, you can hit the socket with a hammer and get the nut past the burs you (I) made when pulling them with vice grips.

I have never had a problem I give them a twist left and right and then pull straight out. Try a twist first works for me very time.

FWIW a 1/2 fine thread lug nut will screw on the injector threads to pull them. i know its not the right thread but it doesnt bugger them up or anything and it works good. trust me i did it.

You shouldnt twist the injectors in the bores. They have a "tit" for alignment and you could damage the injector or mark the head/bore. Try to avoid any twisting movement when pulling injectors. They should be lifted straight up and out.

I was trying to pull one from a 4bt for my buddy. The nut was rusted to the body and I could not get it loose. He told me to just use the air wrench and get it out. OK, it's your head! I did, and now it it has a new really coarse threaded injector hole. ;)
I did get the new injector to go in, it didn't really damage the threads for the nut. It sure looked bad though!
