nozzles

Postby TRENDZ » Sat Jul 25, 2009 3:29 pm

I have my truck totally apart right now. I'm putting in a head gasket since the cab is off, and it will never be this easy to do again! Anyway, while the head is off, I was thinking of having my stock(non I/C) injectors cleaned/tested. Would it be sensible to do this, or are new injectors close to the same price? Are there "tricks" that can be done to these nozzles to get more power or better fuel economy? If so, who does it, and approx how much would it cost?

I'd recommend getting them cleaned and pop pressures reset. Most shops will do it for $10-15 apiece around here. New tips are $65-70.

If you plan to stay in the 300hp range, your stock nonIC injectors will be just fine, you will only need to add pump tuning and some more air to get there.

What kind of mileage are you getting now? If you are in the 20+ range, I wouldnt put too much effort into getting more- there are some that top 25, but they are few and far between.

Thanks for the info. I'll give you a little background on what I have going on. I traded my old truck(90 d250) which was rusted to uselessness, for an early 91 cab/chassis dually that was in the same condition. I wanted a dually, and the extended frame will give me a better ride, and room to mount a work box in addition to a bed.
Anyway, I had a box and cab ready to do a swap on the old truck when this one came along. In addition to the things I mentioned, this truck has a nice interior, air contitioning, and cruise control.
I drove this truck home from the trade, and dis-assembled it. So... other than the 5 miles I drove it, I have no real idea of mileage or dependability. I'm pretty much going through the entire truck, doing things that I wanted to do to the other truck(governor spring, intercooler, piston lift pump, good converter,etc... But along the way, there are things that are to simple to do now, than to put off 'till later.(head gasket, fuel lines, brakelines)
My goal is to have a driver friendly tow rig that will be dependable, powerful, and gets the mileage close to what my old one got(19-21).
Any other suggestions would be warmly welcomed. Thanks.

I had 2 quotes on injectors today from local shops. One place quoted $69 each to "recondition" my injectors. The other place quoted me $55 each for new injectors/ no core charge. Is this pricing in line with what you guys would expect?
The place that wanted to overhaul my injectors did put them on a test stand. I put them on our pop tester at work, and 5 of them atomized poorly, and one just flat out dripped. They called and gave me the same results, so I know they checked them out. I don't know if reconditioning includes new tips or if they are just cleaning them. I guess what I'm worried about with the other place's price is that to me, it seems low, and I don't want some generic injector that will give me problems. OR... is the other place just gouging me?

I would ask what the " new " ones are. They may be lucas pods. You should have a 4x.012 9mm injector. Pods are a 7mm injector that needs an adapter to run.

If I recall correctly, I believe he called them 73x? Does that mean anything to any of you guys?
