A run away is when a diesel gets uncontrolled fuel. The engine will rev till it explodes most of the time. A few examples are. A turbo failure can cause it. An injection pump failure can cause it. In our case turning the fuel screw in to far can cause it. A diesel can run on about anything that will burn if it gets pulled into the intake.
About the only way to kill a runaway is to stop air flow into the engine.
