wierd fueling and idling issues?

Postby mopowa » Mon Oct 12, 2009 1:27 am

Well I just recently made a 400 km drive back home for thanksgiving. At the end of the trip I noticed that I was getting excessive white smoke out my exhaust when I would step on the throttle. I had a few ideas of what it could be, so when I got home I took apart the top of my pump and looked at my DennyT fuel pin. It was gauged pretty good, so I assumed that it may have been sticking on there. So I polished it down and put it back in. In doing so I noticed that the pin that rides on the fuel pin was sticking and wouldn't travel all the way out sometimes, I cleaned it as best as I could. Now when i go out driving 50 percent of the time it will be a whitish grey smoke, and the other half i'll be getting good fuel and pure black smoke. Leads me to believe that it is for sure a sticking pin. If this is true, are there any good ways to fix this so it operates smoothly? Maybe replace the rubber seal? I also noticed my mileage was the worst its ever been since. I just replaced the filter so its definitely not that. I'd imagine fuel pump has probably failed?

The next problem that arouse is the trucks idling. I can get it idling at about 1000rpm just fine, no problems there. Though when I go to put it in gear it stalls on me. So I adjusted my idle to probably around 12-1300rpm and put it in gear and it just barely manages to idle. When it stalls, and I go to fire it back up it will idle perfectly, than once I kick the throttle a little bit, it will start idling back up to 1300rpm where I had originally set it.
From what I can tell, putting it into gear is making my engine idle 300rpm lower. Now I know there is drag from the tranny, but not enough to kill my engine at 1300rpm. This is the first time my truck has shown these symptoms as well, usually it idles at 1000rpm and goes into gear just fine.....
I did notice however the last time i drove my truck before all this, that it would idle unusually high until it got hot, than I could flick the throttle a bit and would go to normal idle. I was having to do this more and more until lately flicking the throttle doesn't do anything...

If anyone had a similiar experience, and can possibly lend me their brians and experience i'd really appreciate it!

Cheers

I'm not sure about the idle issue. WRT the fuel cones, it's a good idea to pull them out and check/clean every so often if you're not running a stock pin. Many have turned up too soft lately, not just the BD cones like was the standing rule for some years. Debris left from abrading the cone probably helps ruin the o-ring contributing to leaks and eventually sticking the pin at some point. Just a guess.

my truck does the exact same thing man and ive come to the conclusion that my i/p is worn out 440 000kms. Pretty sure the idle issue is the pump cant crank the pressure up enough to fire the injector properly which results in falling on its face at a proper idle, so only other option is to raise the idle to get enough fuel to hold er own under load.
