280K miles, on a "rebuild" 50k ago, smokes blue til warm

Postby oldestof11 » Sat Mar 20, 2010 2:32 pm

So like the title says, 280k miles, supposed rebuild 50k miles ago, and until it warms up, it smokes blue. Smells like diesel, uses 2 qts every 3000 miles, and leaks around the front seal. Misses and puffs blue when you blip the throttle (not even floored, just give it a quick tap) but when it comes up in RPM's slow, about 1000-1200 rpms (guessing here) it evens out. Almost like a cold start in winter and you try to bring the rpms up when you dont let the grids cycle....

Turbo? Goes to 25 psi when floored. No shaft play on the compressor side.

Rings?

Nothing is in the coolant, so no headgasket leak. Also, none in the oil.

How's the blowby?

I'm thinking valve seals.

I'm thinking the timing is a little retarded, like..... Ah, forget it! ;) It smells like diesel, and the seal could be leaking the 2 qts in 3k miles.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I was thinking valve seals too. No blow by, not even at idle! I washed the underside of the truck, the only oil now showing up is around the tailshaft of the tranny. From the engine to tranny, nothing.

Pete, you would know about retarded..... timing. :D

2 qts in 3000 miles is not much. I have driven 3208 cats that would burn 1 gallon a day. :D

That's 2 gallons Tim. Used 1, lost 1. ;)
We had a 66 Mack with a 673 where I used to work. It would lose a quart a day if you filled it to the full mark. Leave it low and it would never use any. Dennis used to top it off everyday, and complain about how it used oil. Nobody else would put any in and it would stay on the add mark for weeks. We just couldn't get him to not top it off. He wasn't too bright.

If it was valve seals it would be blue each time you started it, and if you pull it down a gear as you come to a stop or down a hill, when you step on it again it will leave a cloud. BTDT. Got to redo valve seals in a S10 because I screwed them up.

Yep, the old diesels was why there used to be a black streak down the center of each lane on every highway, now it is from old S10s.

I thought a quart every 2 to 3k would be normal considering how many miles you have on that engine. When it's cold here, (South Fl.) I have a little blue smoke but it goes away once I'm warmed up. I had everything checked out about 5k ago, and it's all well within spec. And NO blow-by? I don't think so. There's not a diesel engine made that has no blow-by. ;)
