bent turbo shaft

Postby skilletky » Thu Nov 03, 2011 7:27 pm

What makes the turbo shaft bend? One of our otr trucks just got towed in for loss of power, first thing i checked was blown off cac piping, then checked the turbo, and the shaft on the turbo is bent. Is this due to heat, or the comp wheel cracking and the unbalanced and high rpm of the wheel cause the shaft to bend? The comp wheel does not look to be cracked anywhere. I have wondered about this before but never thought to ask.

i've got a 2002 write off i've been using for parts that was rolled over really hard . the turbo hit the passenger frame rail hard enough to bend the shaft .

it seems that there is enough flex in the compressor housing to side load the compressor wheel to bend the shaft .

the turbo was a pdr hx35/40 hybrid .

the compessor housing can shift sideways in the center section, when I was clocking my 35 I would have to be carefull because if you worked it too far eiter side it would jam the wheel. definently has the ability to bend the end of the shaft, the portion that is outside the seal/bearing atleast

the driver said he was just driving down 75 and it started to make a ringing sound and started loosing power, he drove about another 2 mile to get off the highway and they towed him in. the turbo still spins free, it just where the comp wheel is on the shaft is bent. if you were to be looking at the exhaust wheel and spin it, you would not be able to tell there was a problem. it is a hx-52. had one a few months back that did the same thing, he got off the exit headed to our terminal and it started making the ringing sound he said. pulled the intake off and the shaft was bent, he tried to pull around back to drop his trailer and all i heard was pop, rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. the wheel exploded and he kept trying to back up and then the engine ran away.

Sounds to me like the turbo is undersize for the load its getting. Maybe just jumping off the go pedal at full wind is causing it. I have been super lucky on my big stuff. My truck I drive is close to 700k. Just makes you wonder how many revolutions that baby has spun. I have been hauling in some real hills and running about 20 mph at the top right on the floor.

That is most probably it, it is a volvo d12d. The first 3 series of that engine were pretty good till the d12d, thats when all the egr got put on. Im thinking all our new trucks with the CR ISX 15 our gonna have the same problem. They only got he431 on them. Seems like a tiny a$$ turbo for that big of an engine
