radiator coolant line placement

Postby kenmartin » Fri Dec 23, 2011 9:00 am

i would like to ask for your help i have the larger bottom and top rad hoses connected, the heater core hoses connected- but am running into an issue, the vehicle that i placed the 1990 12 valve in has an overfill tank that is where coolant is added into the system, as is the radiator has no place to add coolant to, my question is it has 2 half inch nipples and 1 inch and three quarter nipple, one of the smaller is connected to the overflow of the rad, where to run the other small one? i have taken off the heat exchanger so there is 2 open spots on the bottom of the passenger side of the engine 2 spots coming out of the engine thru one opening close to the lower rad coolant hose, should i use this to attach to the rad over flow tank kinch and three quarter spot? any info i would be thankful

The overflow tank needs to be connected to the barb on the rad at the fill cap. the cap only lets the coolant out once the system has reached a certain pressure. it also lets it back in when under vaccum. anywhere on the motor you hook into will be under pressuse.

I reread your question. If i understand right your using the rad from the vehicle your putting the cummins in and it has no fitting for the overflow?

If the vehicle had the overfloe tank to start with where was it hooked to originally?

SpeedwayMotors.com sells this inline fill adapter in 1-1/2" #917-12006 @ $40. They also offer an inline air bleed valve.

Many newer vehicles use a pressurized overflow bottle - the "rad cap" is on this bottle. No filler on the rad itself. It could be tee-ed into the cooling system just about anywhere. Just throwing another option out there...

Ken, I reread the whole page. Run the 1 3/4 line to where ever you can, one of the heat exchanger ports is fine. Small one from the radiator overflow is fine. The other small line should go from near the thermostat housing in the top of the head to the overflow bottle. These will let air out of the radiator and block when filling. A lot of the new equipment is set up this way. ;)
