IP install problems

Postby GO OVRIT » Sat Mar 10, 2012 5:53 pm

I pulled the pump off and fixed a few leaks and wound up with worse problems. I must have knocked the keyway out when I put the pump back on. After many attempts to bleed the lines, I pulled the pump back off and found the woodruff key in more pieces than when I put it in. Aside from a small gouge in the shaft taper that I filed out, there was no visible damage. It obviously was out of time though. What is the next step in getting the pump timed?

most likely to find TDC #1 then TDC the pump on number one. IIRC there is a way to pin the pump on number one then ya stuff em together and dont forget to un pin the pump

Just throw a key back in it and line the keyways up. The pump can't go 180* out or anything, so as long as the key reseats correctly you'll be fine.

but dont forget the IP rotates at half engine spd so if hte IP wants to fire on #1 the engine will be wanting to fire on a different cyl but then again i could just be over thinking this :?

You are. :P

As long as the gear itself doesn't move everything will be fine. The gear is where the reduction is done so everything past it's teeth is back to 1:1

I put a new key in already and put the pump back on. I was hoping I maybe overlooked something, but I think I screwed the pump up. That was the first pump I'd had the bottom apart on. The fsm doesn't cover much in regards to the pump.

Tacoclaw is right, if the gear hasn't moved, you're ok.

If you didn't lock the pump before you took it off, thats ok, too. You will just have to rotate the IP shaft and woodruff key to align with the keyway.

Before I snugged down those nuts I took a pick and felt that the woodruff key was seated in the groove. Also, before I installed the woodruff, I peened the round side so it fit snug in the groove. (Probably not necessary, but the way my luck runs, it would have fallen off installing it)

That's what I did with the woodruff key too so it wouldn't move again. It didn't actually fall out the first time. It slide up and back the sheared off. I'm pretty sure my main problem was me having the pump apart. Im not getting good pressure at the injectors.

Is the manual shutdown lever adjusted properly,if its not it could cause this. Could try backing out its rest stop some
