higher fuel pressure with colder temps

Postby comotionman » Sun Nov 20, 2011 7:45 pm

ok, so i put a low pressure piston pump on my truck and plumbed a fixed gauge in off a tapped banjo bolt to make sure it really was a lppp. well this was when the weather was a bit warmer. all looked good, so i got lazy about installing my hood/cowl mounted pressure gauges. well today i about sthi when i lifted the hood to check things out and saw the gauge sitting about 25psi. this was with the engine off and i said no way, lemme start it up and see. sure enough it is up around 25psi. of course i never put a pressure regulator on as i did not think it necessary. big mistake. after some thought i realized the only thing to create this much pressure is the thickened fuel due to much colder temps. now i need to scramble a bit and get a regulator before i push the seal out of the injector pump. anyone else experience this? any thoughts about this? do you guys agree with my assessment? i am kinda pissed for dropping the ball on this. after plumbing in the fixed gauge trying to be cautious i still end up getting into trouble.

Go down a few posts... I am in the same boat with my carter pump. Was 15-18 when out was warm out. I am ordering a Mallory adjustable bypass regulator in hopes of solving this . Truck is parked till then.
