Turbo Housing

Postby nolafishr » Fri Jan 13, 2012 3:51 am

I am getting me a 93 250 and was looking at changing the turbo housing out with a 16cm housing, I have heard that they will give you better and improved flow because of the smaller housing. How hard is it to change out? How many of you went this route or have you just changed out the whole turbo itself? I do not have the truck yet but I am looking for some upgrades and improvements for it, I will have the truck soon.

A smaller housing will make the turbo spool quicker. To a certain point a smaller housing will hamper flow, but with the amount of fuel a somewhat stock VE can move, I doubt you'll ever see that problem. I'm not sure what years the 21cm housing came on, but upgrading from that would be a very noticable. I haven't swapped housings because my '89 has an 18 or 18.5 housing, so going to a 16 is a marginal upgrade

Im pretty sure that 93 has the 18cm housing on it stock so changing it out for the 16 wont do much for you. My truck with the stock turbo and just pump mods has netted me anywhere from 32 to 40 psi, so you should be fine for a good while. Also an uphill WOT run to 70 mph, I only hit 1150 degrees on the pyro. As everyone here will tell you, save your money for a complete turbo upgrade like an S300 or the like. First things first is good gauges, then go to town turning that pump up! It will be much more noticeable and money better spent. For at least a month your truck with just pump mods will be enough to keep you happy. Then its time for injectors, pump spring, and the new turbo. Good luck and have fun!

The choice you make on which turbo you choose to go with really depends on what the truck is going to be used for i.e., play toy, sled puling, daily driver, towing, etc. There are so many options, for instance, I use my truck for hauling stuff, occasional towing and driving to and from work. I have a stock H1C with a GDS 60mm compressor wheel and housing on the cold side and a non wastegated 14cm2 housing on the hot side. It worked really well for just having the pump turned up, cleaned up all of the smoke, and spooled up pretty fast, improving the efficentcy of the truck. Before I put the larger injectors in, it worked great, now with larger injectors, I could use a S300 variant of some sort to match the higher fueling. For the time being, I just keep my foot off the floor when I am towing heavier. All in all, it just really depends on what you have plans for your soon to be yours 1st gen ;) Hope this helps ya!

The truck will used as a daily driver and towing occasionally, I want to do some upgrades but nothing real serious, just to help and improve air flow.

IIRC, late 91, and some 92's had them, as mine did :puker:

This says they were still putting the 21's in during 93.

I believe those were put on non-intercooled versions.

My '92 had a 21cm on it, I just changed it out to a 14cm.
When I had my '89 it had the 18cm or maybe 18.5cm.
