Non-I/C turbo selection/modifications????

Looking to do an upgrade on a turbo and was wondering what turbo to use and what kind of modifications are involved with it?

My truck is a 1990 w250 4x4, 5spd swapped, 3.07 gears used as DD and for towing.

I was told and HX35, HX40, or HE351C would be good.

Im trying to find what would be a good turbo to use for my truck with pump mods, cold air intake, 3" intake ram, 100 hp injectors, grid delete etc.

I use the truck for towing and DD so what would be the best selection from what others have used similar to my use?

PICTURES WOULD GREAT!!!!! Im trying to see the best turbo selection and what is involved with putting one on being NON-I/C.

HE351CW. Some things need to be removed so the oil drain and oil supply lines can be turned correctly.

If that's the 3rd gen turbo you'll have some fancy piping to get it to your intake. Essentially what's on the first page of my giant thread in The Good Stuff.

If I had to do it again I'd do the 351cw as well. Simple, tight housing with a big gate, and a perfect turbo to use in a twins set.

Here's my HX35

Ported the intake crossover too for a little more flow. Wasn't hard to put on. I welded the wastegate shut. You can also use a WH1C off a 1994-1996 ram as they are basically the same as an HX35 but with a clamp on style compressor.







Also, take the compressor housing O ring out and put a bead of silicone in there instead. Worked for me and the turbo spools twice as quick now. Just make sure you don't have shaft end play as if there is too much it will rub

I'm a fan of the Super HX40. It has a 4" outlet you you will need to either buy or make a 4" downpipe (I know the HX35 has a 3" outlet, I'm not sure about the HE35CW.)

Im liking m880cummins turbo setup, simple and an increased power difference. Why did you weld the wastegate shut? Now the h1c is what is factory on my truck correct? So the wh1c on the 1994-1996, would that be the same as what i have but waste-gated, or is it different?

Im just trying to find a good turbo for my setup and dont want to have to keep changing them if im not satisfied you know?

I have an HX-35 on my truck and it wont keep things cool, so ima try the he351cw sometime affor summer

Don't hold me to this but I think its actually 4 3/8s outlet on the he351

In my mind, an HX35 is two steps over and one step forward on a mildly modified engine. I'm sure it would be an improvement on a near stock engine though. I place another vote for a Super 40. m880cummins is pushing an HX35 really hard, who knows how long it will last at that power level.

I made this thread a while ago. I was in the same place as you, I had enough fuel, I needed air, and I only wanted to upgrade once. Still haven't gone through with any of it

Very true. When I say pump adjustments, I mean that I have the fuel screw 1/2 turn off of runaway, the starwheel set conservatively high, the stock fuel pin rotated to the deep side, and the smoke screw flush with its lock nut. I also have no EGT or boost gauges (shame on me ) so I don't know EXACTLY what my engine is doing
