Alternator wiring???

Postby Deathrod » Fri Feb 24, 2012 11:05 pm

I got my motor running but it's not charging.....I adapted the alt wiring to a universal hot rod wiring harness. Should the alt put out power just by spinning or does something have to tell it to? Any one have an idea how to get it to work with a harness made for a gasser?

Your going to have to wire in an external voltage regulator or swicth to a one wire alternator. It depends on if you want the extra wiring.

I had it all typed out, but it's easier to see in pics, so here's some pics. Sorry they're so big.

If you can't see them all right-click and select "view image".

Well there is a green wire and blue wire coming off the the plug, I ran them back to the regulator and heard the blue wire needed 12v from the ignition to tell the alt to charge. And obviously the power wire to the battery and ground to ground.....does this seem right?

I have an external voltage regulator in mine, was there when I got it. Now I have a charging problem and it burned the diode in the alternator. What I really don't get is why this voltage reg. seems to be causing a draw and my amp gauge moves around a lot, it's moved a lot the whole time I've had it so IDK what "normal" is

Just noticed on that diagram the voltage regulator needs to be grounded.....mines just sitting there.....I'll try that. Would that have fried it already?

Possible but a lot of them are grounded just by being bolted to a metal surface (clean)
