engine surging???

Postby hassy21 » Sat Mar 24, 2012 3:02 pm

I have been having a fueling problem for about 2 weeks now but it gradually got worse. Under idle it high rpm Ottawa acts like it is sucking air from somewhere or starving for fuel. Sometimes it does it sometimes not. I changed my fuel filter and drain valve because it had been leaking for quite some time and thought that it could be the drain valve. I replaced them both and what do you know it still leaks. Almost worse than before. I took it back off thinking that I messed something up and took my adapter housing off and checked it out to see if there was any cracks in the plastic and there wasn't although it has a gasket that seems to fit loosely on the adapter. Cleaned and put it all together again primed it with the primer that's on the piston LP and just priming it made it leak but can't tell where exactly. Seems to be out of the brand new drain valve. Just need some info maybe this has happened to somebody else. Its getting very frustrating. Any help greatly appreciated

If your truck still has the fuel heater on it it could be leaking there. The filter screws right onto the bottom of it and it's got 2 wires coming out of it. If it's what's leaking, you need to take the filter off, then take a flathead screwdriver up from the bottom and screw off the stud that the filter threads onto. Once that's off the heater will come off with it.

The heater has an o-ring that goes between it and the block, though I don't know what the number is for it.

I took that off and looked at it. Visibly it seems ok but the o ring looks like it is too small because it doesn't seem like it is doing anything just sitting there. Ill get a new one no prob but don't know if that's what it is for sure.

Are you looking for a fuel heater, the o-ring, or the stud that allows you to delete the fuel heater altogher?

Could I delete it and be fine.California only gets down to maybe 30 degrees. Would it mess with my fuel mileage?

You'll be fine & it won't change your mileage if you delete it. My heater is about to be gone. It's like $10 from Case and $20 from Cummins.

Nope, it's all the same. The only thing different is that your filter will sit like an inch higher in the engine bay since the heater won't be spacing it down.

Also, if you want to buy that from Case, replace the first 3 with a J when you give them the number.

Cool thanks also I was thinking about buying a fuel filter without the drain valve. Would that be worth doing?

I prefer having the drain, since it lets you get rid of any water your truck picks up. Now, if you're talking about the big, plastic factory drain setup then yes, it would be worth doing. You lose your Water in Fuel light, but if you drain it periodically then it's not needed anyways.

I had one, but I honestly can't remember the filter number for it...

How would I drain it without the factory drain valve

There's a filter that screws in it's place, but instead of an open hole it's got a normal drain valve built in the bottom.

I'll try to find the number tonight.
