doggy pile of turd

Postby Hansen01 » Fri Mar 30, 2012 6:52 pm

so i put a he351 on the other day and now it runs way worse than it ever has... it will spool up to between 5-10lbs of boost if i easy in on it( spools good till about 10lbs) but when i put it to the floor it blacks out the whole highway and im still makeing 10 to 20lbs, (slowly) i got it up to 25lbs once and it was still smoking like a train and it was very doggy.
i know everyone is gonna say boost leak, but ive checked checked and checked again, and i cant find any, anyone have any ideas?

Just a thought or two: What's your EGT doing? Is the wastegate working like it should?

egts are gooduntill i get on it and then they climb climb climb, wastegate it removed and i wired it up tight with a long wire so i could feel it and see if its loose like the waste gate is open, but it is always tight and it is wired shut. it does feel like the wastegate comes open, but the wire is always tight

No boost leaks anywhere, even where the compressor housing connects to the rest of the turbo? I had one there for the longest time...

You sure you wired the wastegate closed and not open? Either that or the exhaust side is way too big and you can't get it to spool enough to clean up the fuel.

yes the wasetgate is closed(i took the exhaust off and made sure) and i did have to take the compressor houseing off, how do you know if you have a leak there?
and pete the reason i think the turbo is not to big is because the bottom end spools like a champ, but the top end falls on its face. i retarded the timeing tonight to 1/8 inch off stock and it did help i think but is still not impressive. pulling a trailer with a small 190 allis on it i could barely get into sixth gear without it blacking out the road and losing speed.
it really does feel like i have a leak somewhere or the wastegate is coming open but i can check the tension on the wire and is tight after every run, thanks for the suggestions guys, keep em coming :D

Well, on my S300 there's like 8 bolts that clamp the housing on, just like the exhaust side on an HX35. My intercooler hose was holding it in place, but when I finally took it off I was able to spin the housing around in circles. It rattled out 4 of the bolts, so I had to replace them.

I'd pull the housing off and check to see if there's an o-ring between the housing and the centersection of the turbo.

An easy check is dribbling soapy water on any suspect areas (boots, the gap between the compressor housing and backing plate, etc.) and it'll bubble if air is getting by. If it's leaking big time once you get it up and moving, I figure it's got to be leaking a little bit at idle. Also, boots never split on the side you can see ;)

i put soapy water around everything but the compressor housing, and even sprayed ether around all the boots, il have to look at the compressor housing, and also i took my fairly clean air filter off today and it did run better without it, so thinking some of my problem is in my filter also

Check where the air intake plate on the head is bolted down. Have had those bolts work loose before. Same as the 4 that hold the intake horn into place.

often the he351 from a 3rd gen has warped turbine wheel from too high of temps from CR guys who want to get all they can out of a turbo rated for 425HP max (not efficient beyond that). If it spools quick, then cuts out, with no contact on the housing I would lean towards a boost leak as well.

We are testing a BW 59/61/.80 non gated turbo at our location that should be a very quick spooler and available for under $1000 new. Much better than the 35/40 and very similar in flow to the he351, and an easier conversion. Will be testing for drive pressure limitations of the turbine housing as anything over 1.2 : 1.0 boost will result in lost power. That is why boost is not = to Power, only a true measurement of restriction.
