VE Pump Modifications

Postby TheTowingCowboy » Sat Apr 21, 2012 7:39 pm

I am wondering what all can be done to a VE Pump? I know you can 'Adjust' it hell west and crooked, but I mean actual parts modifications. I know there is governor spring and the fuel pin as well as a 14mm head, but is there anything else one could do to it? Could you have a pump head done up bigger and better? Is there anything done int he past that has proven to be a big help? I got my engine off the local Big Power Cummins Guy, and I am in Cahoots with him so I have access to his resources decently cheaper then most and if I know what to ask/bring up would make things a lot easier on my end. I plan on running compounds on it and well you know BIG INJECTORS. If I could shoot flames lol I would put stacks on the truck lol. I plan on doing the pump all myself just sending off what I need to send off to get machine work done to it.

Also what has been shown to be the best combination for pulling mainly sled pulling, cause IDK if they will allow me to pull in any of the street classes or not since i have compounds.... But hey lol build this like I want!

Well welcome to the site. All your questions you have asked are addressed in threads in here but the search feature sucks. There are different things that can be done to the pump to help hp. These little pumps do not fuel over 3500 so no reason to push big Rpm you will be out of peak power. The 14mm head increases fueling a lot but siezes under higher rpm. Just start readinv some.

I don't plan on goin over 3K as it is. I just want to do it all right the first time and I am mainly looking for the unconventional stuff to do to it, you know the stuff not everyone does? Thats what I'm lookin for.

Stuff not everybody does will not be on the internet.

Sounds like you just convert to a P-pump to me.

Sadly, to even be remotely competitive at sled pulling in the midwest, especially Ohio/Indiana/Illinois, you have to have a P-Pump. Both the RPM and fueling requirements of pulling make a P-Pump the way to go. A VE in any form would be spent by the time you get a 65mm lit, none the less keeping on top of it going down the track and that's in work stock.

Or you could move west and compete with pulltilbroke. He does pretty darn well out there 8)

Well the P-Pump conversion sibeing thought about problem is finding the gear cover and how will it work with my super simple jsut power tot he fuel shut off and started thing? The engine is going in a 1975 F250, and I want to keep my engine simple and less electronic as possible. I also liek the direct link fuel pedal.

P- pump engines only need 12v to the fuel shutoff as well.

Click on the names of Seeker, Ford, and CumminsKing and go through all their old posts, starting from day one. KTA and BGilbert as well. They were talking about this stuff from the day the site started.

You just have to find the names that were in the conversations back then and then track down their posts.

HA! No kidding, another person on the internet from this area?!? I though I was the only one. :lol:

If you drive a 1stgen I'd imagine I've seen you around. It seems like the only thing I look for on the road anymore is 1stgen Dodges. Mostly to drool over how much better than mine they look.

Sounds like a plan to me, man. Throw me a PM and we can get together and watch my truck drip oil for a while. 8)

Also, your engine is going to need at least 3 wires with a VE. One for the FSS, which you can split with the KSB if it's a non-IC'd pump, and 2 for the alternator. If it's an IC'd VE, then you give the KSB 12v to activate, but it's not really needed for a DD. Just run it to the FSS and ignore the KSB. If you use a Ford voltage regulator, you still need 2, but it variates the hot side of the field coils, not the ground side. It's also got some sort of capacitor that goes with it.

With a P-pump, the FSS has 2 hots going to it, and a ground coming out, though you can just ground it to it's mount. If you go pull cable on either, the VE will still need 12v if it's of the non-IC'd variety. Not having variable timing sucks, not to mention it advances the sthi out of it and makes it stupidly loud in the cab.

None of this includes sender wiring for oil pressure and water temp. If you don't count those as wiring, then you should be able to get by with the above.

Use the full words (Until I know the abreviations) and you may have to come help me wire. And I figured there would be wiring for sensors for gauges... Man My dash is gonna look like a semi....... And how would I send you a PM it wont just let me click on your name to send a PM or anything....

EDIT: Says I need to participate more to earn my PMing Privlages, you on the Book of Faces??? If so add me names Jesse Pullins.

Cowboy-
FSS= fuel shut-off soleniod
IC'd= intercooled
KSB= German for a cold starting aid that I believe advances timing

It's just 10 posts to get PM's. Props to you for putting a Cummins in one of the coolest looking trucks ever! Are there pics floating around?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is a cam plate for the VE
