The best injectors for a good fuel economy?

Postby Oskar » Wed Apr 03, 2013 1:11 pm

Hi. i will change all the injector nozzles when i get my truck, i like to give my diesels fresh nozzles and set the pump timing right. but i know that there is several types of aftermarket nozzles for these engines, so i would like some advice on what type to use? i want good quality (bosch or equivalent) and most important is good fuel economy and high torque, what should i choose? and do you recommend setting them at specified opening pressure, or slightly higher (for better fuel atomization, of course advancing the pump a few degrees will be necessary too)
the truck is a W250 1992 with auto trans

Stay bosch, I've recently done testing on aftermarket nozzles and they are not up to par to say the least.

Bosch 190s, 5x10-5x12 size, if low miles nothing wrong with the stockers.

How much power are you looking to gain while doing it?

Hi and thanks for the answer!
are those you mention the stock ones? how about the non-intercooled injectors, heard that they are better to use.
power gain isn't as important as fuel economy, but if both can be combined, i would prefer a 30-40hp increase.

You can't put a non intercooled injector in to a intercooled head. The non ic injector I has a larger diameter nozzle. There may be a way to turn it down but I can't be for certain.

The non-ic sticks can be turned down on a lathe, there was a picture of som floating around on here quite a while back...

I thought so but wasn't sure enough to say it could be.

Ok, thanks so far! I have a lathe so that won't be any big deal, how much larger are the older nozzles?

and, is it a good idea to choose them, or is there any better choice that fits without modification?

Ellis, now that I think of it, it was Jon that had those.

Anyways, all I know is that if I were in the market for some new, efficient injectors, I would be trying some new, Bosch 190's.

Bosch 190s can be had for brand spankin' new for $420 with no core charge..... and the vast majority that have used them say they are the best for economy and they do increase power about 30hp.

Interesting. Tried honing a set to see how they take to modifications?

No, but I've read about guys doing it and I think they opened up to like 48 or 50lpm. Personally if I was trying to get more fuel out of a 190 I would just go with a larger injector and then possibly flowing that. It's kind of like flowing a stock injector out, but paying 600+ for it (420+flow work). Usually when someone wants more fuel they want to go quite a bit bigger.
