Airbox/BHAF?'s

Postby 93 W350 LE » Sun May 26, 2013 2:11 pm

Was thinking. Couldn't a guy just cut a big hole in the factory airbox and then cover the hole with metal screen to achieve more airflow? Or does it just look cooler to do the fab work for a BHAF? Is there any real flow or air temperature advantage one way or the other?
Thanks,
Eric

There's more surface area to a BHAF than there is with the stock filter, actual filtering area not just how much of the media has access to air. If your truck actually requires the extra air the BHAF provides them yes you will see a benefit. There's nothing bad about getting your engine more air than it needs though, same with getting it out.

You could stick your BHAF in the stock box, if it would fit, and achieve roughly the same thing.

There's really no fabrication needed for a BHAF, it's 2 45* couplers, 2 pieces of straight pipe, and 4-5 clamps. If you want to fab up a fender mount you can but I never did.

Where do you find these big filters? Most of the aftermarket filters I have seen are no bigger than the stock filter. Maybe big truck shop/part store?

I got mine at Carquest since we have an account there at work, part #87790. They can usually have stuff there next day.

Back when I put the twins on I heard rumblings of BHAFs not being able to support the airflow the bigger turbos were capable of pulling, so I started looking at the dry AFE filters. They are rated for higher flow, and they definitely made more noise than the BHAF, but I think I'd still get a paper filter if I was using a turbo smaller than a 62mm.

Here's their whole universal page, any one with a 4" flange would work, and here's the one I have now.

I think the AFE is about $10-$20 more expensive than the BHAF if you get it off Ebay or something.

I had a BHAF. My 1st one was a Fleetguard, the 2nd is a CARQUEST. I took out my Old Smokey mount and the BHAF because I was drawing more air than it could supply. I think it was the tube from the filter to the turbo though. I removed the filter and with the tube only I could bottom the filter minder. I paid less for my new AFE 5" flange than I did for my CARQUEST filter.
If anybody is interested the mount and filter are going up for sale. I could be persuaded to get rid of the tubing also. ;)

I have noticed my stock tube accordions a bit as is. I guess its trying to pull more than the current set up will allow.

Hey Pete, I'd like to get into a BHAF setup, if you're going to get rid of yours. :wrench:

Would you happen to know the filter surface area or the overall size of it?

Hold on, I'll go measure one.

10" diameter x 10.5" tall............. or 329.7 square inches...... remember you don't count the ends, as they are blocked off.

Right. So it'd be the height times circumference correct? Either way that's a big filter. lol
