oil bypass and oil analysis

Postby artieb » Sat Feb 15, 2014 7:18 pm

I'm seriously considering installing on on my 92 engine. What experience and recommendations? What brand and prices? I use rotella 15w 40 full synthetic. Where do you all get oil analysis done? Thanks Artie :(

Artie, I've used this place before and they've been around for years. Located in Fort Wayne, Indiana too 8) . http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php They'll send you a test kit for free, you pay the shipping and $25 for the test afterwards.

Hey Bill. I checked out Blackstone and sent for a kit. I want to have clean oil for Lenox this June. If the snow has melted, Thanks Artie

Artie go to your local cat dealer and buy a sample bottle. Should be around $12. Drop it in the mail and wait for the results.

I just ordered that blackstone kit.... I'm curious to know just how bad it says the ol' engine is.

Last I knew Cat kits were about $20-25, around here anyways.
Artie, a bypass won't give you new looking oil, it will still be black, FYI. It will however take more of the finer particles out of the oil.
The best way to use oil analysis is to sample it each oil change. Doing a 1 off sample will tell you if it is really bad, but if you have been driving in dusty conditions you will have a higher silica count for example, which isn't a reliable indicator. The best way is a sampling program so you can watch for trends like the metals or water going up which indicates a problem getting worse.

Thanks Pete I have to start somewhere. I understand the oil analysis and what a bypass system benefits are. I do a shade tree analysis checking for viscosity, fuel contamination, and contamination, the best I can. Without a spectrometer.
I always worry about sending engine oil to a remote filter and back. Some of the bypass systems use barbed fittings and hose clamps. Wondering if hydraulic hoses would be a better choice? I'll post my results on my external drain interval Thank Artie

Got my oil anylist from Black Stone Labs, the man called and spent 20 minutes on the phone, good customer service. He said my engine had 45 ppm of chrome. everything else was within tolerance. The only place I know of Chrome is in the cylinder Rings? My engine has 258,500 miles, with minimum blow by and oil consumption. any idea where this may have come from, I'm not too concerned. Just curious. Artie

I put a Puradyn TF 12 unit on mine. Had an analysis done by Finning before installing and came back good in every category. Haven't put enough miles on yet for another oil change but will have another analysis done to check for improvement.
The Puradyn unit has a heater in it to get rid of any moisture as well as the 1 micron filter.
As said above the oil will still get darker but took approx. 2000 KM before it was noticeable instead of within 500 KM.

Thanks Pete, Del silver, and everyone. I understand that our engines have black oil and virtually any amount of filtering won't keep it a pretty honey colored. The unavoidable mess with used diesel motor oil is as much a factor as any of why an extended drain would work for me. De silver, what is you filters replacement? Disposable canister, toilet paper? Thanks Artie

Artie it is a replaceable element in a canister. Top comes off the canister and the element lifts out.
I mounted it where the original air filter was so easy access and nothing in the way for changes. I also put a banjo bolt with valve for the return line on the existing oil drain so can now just open the valve to change oil.
I am not currently using synthetic but if I change in the future this will make taking a sample a piece of cake.
This fitting also came from Puradyn. I plumbed the supply line into the extra hole on top of the factory oil filter housing.

Artie, no joke on that toilet paper , at my old shop we had a transfer pump unit that had four Gulf Coast filters on it, they used paper towels as filter elements. The air filter for the air pump was another small canister, that used toilet paper.

The Frantz oil filter uses a roll of toilet paper, and apparently works quit well. http://www.frantzoil.com/home.html
