Being weird again

Postby mitchk » Tue Apr 22, 2014 1:13 pm

Well today on my way up to my garage after class I got on it a little up a hill and wen I let off towards the top of te hill I noticed that it didn't seem to be engine braking but kinda just holding rpms and gradually falling. I got pretty worried cause I thought it was about to run away. I pulled into the drive way and it was holding about 1200-1400 or so rpms. I put it in 1st and pulled up the driveway and it dropped a bit then went right back wen I pushed the clutch back in. Now. since Sunday my key hasn't worked to shut it off so I popped the hood an hit te manual shut off. I messed with my timing for the first time last week and I went a bit past 1/8 inch an it hasn't started very good since and I thought that might have something to do with it so I retarded it just a little. Started it and idled a little high at first. Revved it once or twice an seemed fine and then took it around the block and wen I got back it seemed fine. Could too much timing make that happen. I've been driving it a little over a week with the timin like that. Or does it have something to do with why the electric shut off doesn't work anymore. Thanks. Mitch

Timing shouldn't affect idle in that way. Having the pump too close to runaway would do what you're describing

That's what I don't understand. That was the first thing I thought when it happened but I haven't messed with the pump settings in a while so I don't get why it would do it out of nowhere.

I'm leaning towards the shut off solenoid causing a problem.

Being too close to run away with the fuel screw. Others have had that happen. Worked fine for the longest then out of the blue,, runaway.
Throttle arm, throttle linkage, cable binding, return springs. Next time you have a high idle, look at the back of the throttle arm and see if it is resting on the idle stop.
After that, it gets internal. Often just gummed up. Try running a can of Seafome through the injection pump.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.
