coolant temp sensor location

Postby muddpar » Thu May 01, 2014 3:37 pm

when I first bought my 92 Cummins it had a aftermarket coolant temperature sensor, located in the front of the engine by the thermostat. I run electric fans and that sensor is located where stock should be. The electric fans should turn on at 195℉ but they turn on at or over 210℉. The thermostat in the truck is 180℉. So my question is location the problem or do I have a bad sensor. Would switch in the sensors fix the problem. the engines is in a 93 Chevy so I can't run the stock fan, no room for it without a body lift. The gage in the truck stock Chevy.

Use an IR temp gun and an ohm meter. Suspend the sensor over a pot of water on the cook top, monitor temperature, and see when it turns on. That will tell you if the sensor is bad or not.

I believe the stock temp sensor location is in the side of the head at the rear of cylinder 6. That's where mine is anyway.
