VE Pump cam plate off 180 degrees?

Postby Diesel » Wed Nov 26, 2014 6:02 pm

Resealed my pump and now I get tons of fuel at the injectors but no smoke and no start. Could I have put the cam plate in 180 degrees off? It looked symmetrical to me so how can I tell if I have it 180 off? Also, could it be an FSS problem? It worked before the reseal (i only replaced the seal at the head and the seal at the shaft as well as clean up the delivery valves and removed that center plug on the head to clean it) so I'm not sure if the FSS could stop working all of a sudden?

Timing or camplate off. The camplate has a "tit" that holds the h/r assembly. That "tit" should be inline with the keyway (pointing same direction).

I had the same thing happen when I did the 14... I somehow managed to get the keyway WAY off.

So the camplate tit should line up with the keyway that goes through the gear - is that what you mean?

I advanced the timing like 1/4" past stock but I doubt that would cause a no-start situation.

So if the tit and the keyway are not in alignment (aka 180 degrees off), I can still tons of fuel at the injectors like I am now?

Ok then thanksgiving morning will be pump removal time. I'm almost positive the cam plate is my issue. Just can't imagine why an FSS would go back just because it was unplugged and removed. No smoke with all that diesel should have been my first give away.

Hopefully it is just the keyway. Otherwise, it is possible to have fuel, but not enough.... sure you have the power screw in far enough?

I didn't back out any of the screws or take off the throttle shaft. Literally only replaced the large o-ring, the front seal, and cleaned up the delivery valves and loosened that center bolt and retightened it when i realized i dont know what it is.

You dug all the way down to the camplate without taking out the fulcrum lever?

Lets just say I didn't intend on digging that far. Took the head off to get the leaking o-ring and there I was...I blacked out...came to...and put what I saw back together as logically as possible. The springs had fallen out on my dissembly but the rollers were still in place. So cam plate had to go back in and I didn't think there would be 2 ways to it. So I put the cam plate back in, made sure that little button was in the center, and assembled with the 4 springs in place as well as making sure that tit on the collar fit again where it was supposed to.

Hmmm last thought...could I have incorrectly put the fuel pin white plastic ring when reinstalling? That white bushing like thing goes at the bottom of the pin, correct?

Pulled the pump and somehow when I installed the pump I smushed the key in the gear. Half of it is pressed flat around the shaft. I'm not even sure how to get the key out...its not moving at all.

No need to buy an entire pump over a $1 woodruff key.

Do you have any injection pump shops in your town?
