As far as I know there is not supposed to be fuel in the afc. I believe I have heard of people sealling the pump top up so that fuel cannot come out when this happens, but it's not the right way to go about it. I'm not sure what seal has to go bad in side the pump to cause this, it might be an easy fix or it might not.

It's only an o-ring that seals the pin. I think the top has to come off to replace it, but I can't remember exactly.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

The top has to come off. We are doing one on Case500D's truck. Buy a seal kit before you start the repairs.

It's sort of a pain to get to but I did it on my wife's 1990 CTD Ramcharger. Definately, do it while you are putting the gov spring in. The top is already off. I couldn't explain how to do it, but could probably DO it again. I do remember that you need to remove a lever that is in the way and in order to do that, you need to pop out some little ball bearing seals. That was the only part that worried me. Worked out o.k. Just take your time.

I wish I still had this VE pump. I'd take it a part and get pics for you. Sorry.

His pump might not have the ball bearing type of seals. It might look like a freeze plug. The ones we took out of Case500D's truck did.

Removing the afc lever would not be a good idea if you plan on towing with your truck, your egt's would climb very fast and get very high. If you want to get an idea what it would be like take a long bolt that is the same diameter and thread pitch as the smoke screw and put in were the smoke screw goes, and run it all the way down. This will have a similar affect as removing your afc lever, but it won't give quite as much power or fuel.

If you are getting fuel into your AFC well (and, consequently, have fuel coming out the vent tube), you are looking at the wrong part of the pump. The o-ring that seals the AFC guide pin is behind the throttle lever (remove the throttle lever, but leave the shaft), behind the hex key plug. Remove the plug, then carefully remove the pin. You will need a small pick to R&R the o-ring. Get the o-ring back in, and then installation is reverse of removal. This one can be done with the top on the pump- BTDT.
