Front crank shaft seal. ????

Postby Renigade » Mon Feb 16, 2009 8:01 am

This may sound stupid but I have worked on many motors but I did the KDP and the front seal was leaking after the install. I tore it back down and has some one got an exploded view as how this thing goes in. It had a steel ring with it that I could not find a use for.

Sounds like the front seal you purchased came with a wear sleeve. The seal in the seal/wear sleeve combo is different than the seal only kit. If one was to install the seal from a wear sleeve combo by itself, it would leak because of the larger ID of the seal.

You need to make sure what you have is a wear sleeve and not an install tool/ seal depth driver.

There's a high dollar tool used to install the wear sleeve on the crank. I got it started with a flat piece of metal and then used the balancer and crank bolts to draw in onto the crank.

Thanks Mr bgilbert, you hit the nail right on the head. I went back to the parts store, which by the way I have been dealing with for about 20 years. I know the man well and he admitted to putting two broken kits together in the back and bringing them out to me. He also charged me the higher price and I raked him over the coals for a few and walked out with the right gaskets and seals along with a new belt to seal the apology with.
Still don't make my old joints from hurting from all the work of tearing down twice and back together twice. Thanks guys for the help'

Mr. Gilbert!

Glad you got it straightened out. Some kits come with a plastic cone, this is the cover install tool. If it's a wavy washer, it's the seal install tool.Drive with the washer until it hits the cover, and it's at the right depth. The cone, put on the crank, and push the cover on over it. You may have to pull it out with pliers. Most of those seals install dry, because they are teflon. So if it's not rubber, don't lube the crank. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thats what I got with this other one and everything worked out. I installed it dry. Got a few more things to do before firing it up again. Going to have to change the info in my sig in a couple days. ;)
