K&N air filter cleaner

Postby slingshot » Wed Jul 29, 2009 2:01 pm

What do you guys use for cleaning your air filters? I have always used K&N filter cleaner, but that stuff is pricey and was wondering if Simple Green or Purple Power or something along those lines would work also/instead?

Does anyone even run a K&N filter?

Pros and Cons?

A k&n will only keep the birds and rodents out of your engine...

IMO they are great for race applications. For DD not so much...

I run them. People say they do not filter very good. I do know they sound better over the stocker for sure. I have never cleaned mine yet. Don't drive them much. I have a k+n clean kit here for mine when its time. Something my uncle had. Pretty much I thought you degreased them with cleanser , let dry, then reoiled. I think Im right.

The hardcores who get their oil sampled have proven that the free flowing filters like k&n allow alot of particulates thru the filter, silicates for example.

Ask heavy truck shop techs why over the road haulers don't use washable free flowing filters.

An occasional BHAF is not that expensive. I can't even remember when I bought mine, three years ago maybe, and I don't plan on replacing it any time soon.

Richie O, where in Maine are you?
Thats where im from.

I have dual Vortox air cleaners on my 359 and I change them every 3rd oil change, and never thought about doing anything different for that, but the K&N filter was in the Dodge when I got it 5 years ago, and I have cleaned it and re-oiled it at every oil change. I have never heard that they let stuff in, so thats good to know.
Does the factory filter filter flow as much as a BHAF? Or does BHAF stand for something meaning high flow?

Right in the mid coast. Where all the cone eaters love to come on vacation. :D

BHAF just stands for big honkin air filter. They flow alot more cfm's then the stocker. I have the books for wix. Maybe someday I will look up cfm difference between the 2.

Around here, you dont even need a rifle to get a deer- they just jump in front of you.

I posted a thread on the TDR about 6 years ago, entitled K&N "filter". After 10K mi, it let enough dust in the intake hose to write my name. Got a new one from K&N, and it was even worse. I threw one away, and gave away 2 others (had one in my mom's and mine). It depends on what part of the country you live in- it did fine in Colorado and its coarser, grittier dust. Here in the midwest with the fine loamy soil, The K&N let the small stuff by. I wont run a K&N, but my AFE has been good so far. I seriously doubt they give you any more power- I was looking at relative scarcity of the paper filters ($50 locally, or $40 shipped from Geno's) when I made my AFE decision.

That's scary - the biggest mistake most people make with them: Cleaning them "too" much. They need a good coating of dirt to even begin filtering properly.

We've always ran aFe filters. the aFe stg2 kit my dad bought for his 05 came with two filters so i put one on the 91 with the BHAF mount on the fender, sounds good and no dirt in the tube.

I don't like the idea of the BHAF because its paper and not high flow, and doesn't whistle good. lol

A BHAF IS high flow by the nature of it being twice the size of the stock filter. Lasts at least 3x as long, or so it seems.

Yeah, I was wondering where that was coming from, myself. First time I ever heard anything bad said about the BHAF.
