Here we go!

Postby DannyL » Sun Jan 10, 2010 3:42 pm

First off I'm a newbie to Cummins and never EVER thought I would drive a Dodge. Well here I am with a W250 1993!
Bought an "Old Horse" for cheap and have a issue. I live in Quebec so keep in mind we're not sunnin' ourselves at this time of year.
Issue at hand:
Started truck yesterday after boosting it. Truck has been sitting for a couple of months so I installed dual 1000 cca batteries to conquer the winter.
Truck ran great (even surprised that the HUGE X cavern was toasty HOT!) except for the OD not working and making my 50 mile drive home a little slow. I fueled up on the way home (half-tank) .Crawled under the beast this morning to see the OD wire was disconnected.... YEAH easy fix. I had plugged in the block heater to see if it worked and it does. So I do the hit the grid twice and let er rip. Ok no rip. Turns over great but no go.
I thought maybe the fuel line froze up, maybe water in the old fuel. I pushed up the release on the fuel filter and liquid came out. So I fuel in the filter.
I read a bunch of stuff on the forum(s) and tried to see if the lift pump was pumping. The truck is on an incline in my driveway, so I thought hummm.
I cracked the bango bolt and starter to manualy pump. Nada. yes it's the position that allows full stroke. tried numerous times and nothing.
Went off and bought some fuel conditioner and dropped some in the tank.

I left it for an hour and tried again. Nada. crawl under the truck and follow the fuel line and bump into the electronic thing in the middle of the frame. WTF is that?

Any ideas??

The saga continues........

Is it in the fuel line? :? Maybe the PO put an electric fuel pump on it when the stocker went bad. It's not a stock item that's for sure! ;)
FYI, If it's plugged in, you shouldn't need to wait for the grids to cycle, let alone twice. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

It has a factory looking plug into it. It's not a pump but come kinda fuel monitoring thing?
It's on the inside of the driver side frame rail a bit forward of the tank.

I looked in Michell and didn't find anything.

Will the fuel conditioner works it's way up the fuel line or an I dreaming?

It's really hard to say without a picture, but sounds like maybe somebody put one of those Davco F/W seperator in there. That would be about the best place to put one. If there's electric lines going to it that would make it a heated model. Those are very nice units and would help alot in cold temps.

Of course it would have to be working properly and not froze up to start with.

Just a guess.

Somebody definitely spliced/plumbed something in there, but no idea what it is. I'd guess a fuel heater of some sort, but never seen one like that before...

That looks like a electric multi tank supply valve. Do you have more then one tank and are you getting fuel from the full one?

Your going to have to track down the wires and the hoses to figure this one out. That for sure looks like a multi tank valve. You may have a switch on the dash or extra hoses going to no place. If you hit the switch and there is no tank for it to draw from then this may be your problem. Some one may have removed the second tank before they sold?

There is a 2 supply and 2 return lines going to that valve by the looks of it.

Snoot, I think you nailed it:

Or if the valve malfunctioned or stuck wrong somehow...???

By the looks of it it's one feed and one return on the "Valve".
Here's a silly question, where would this switch be if there was one?

I disconnected the feed to the lift pump and poured conditioner down it.

I put my finger over the lift pump inlet and pumped a bit and there is almost no suction. How much suction should there be?
