Engine timing

Postby tim curran » Mon Feb 08, 2010 10:56 am

I have a 93 with 250.000 miles on it. I have Lucas high flow inj. A 13mm housing, 3200 RPM springs, fuel screw maxed, banks ram air intake, Kand N air filter, 3 to 5 inch exhaust, BD tourqe converter. My truck smokes like a frieght train and my milage goes from 15 to 12 mpg. I alway run power service in every tank. the weather is cold between 0 an 30 out. what can I do about timing in order to get better fuel milage? :

Push the pump to the head.

the pump is alrady as close to the block as it can get. I don't know if i should pull the pump and jump it a tooth or two. I am not a bad mech but I don't no were to start. I drive my truck every day so I don't want to risk tearing it apart without knowing what to do.

Welcome fellow Mainer!

Tim, what gears are you running? If you have 4.10's I wouldn't expect much more really.

You wouldn't happen to be selling a truck in Uncle Henries would you?

my gear ratio is 3:50 and i run 285 75 16 tires 65 psi My truck tips the scales at 7250. I don't know if it is the winter diesel that is killing my milage or what? With my bad tourque converter I was getting 14 to 15 mpg. I put a BD converter and TPS bypass dial because my over drive was kicking in and out. Now my milage is barly 13.

It should have gotten better with the new converter. I only get around 14 with my 89 and about the same with the 93. I can stretch 18 out of the 93 on a trip.

Is it possible to push the pump to far towards the head and hurt the engine?

Is this the Head and Rotor? or a typo for 12cm exhaust housing?

I would like some info!

Is the park brake on?
Lucas "high flow injectors"? What are they?
Is the wastegate not closing?
Lift pump bad?
Air filter plugged?
Fuel filter plugged?
Injection pump take a dump?
Did you change the converter the same time you did injectors or do you make changes one at a time?

If pump is to the head, you have plenty of timing for what you have.

I have noticed that you can get too much timing, and while it may still run well, it'll suck the fuel.

in my intro it should be 16cm non waste gate housing. My air filter was cleaned, new fuel filter, e brake off and not stuck, 60 hp injectors, turbo housing , 3200 pump springs and pump tweaking was done well before my converter. :?

  I THINK I have figured out my milage issue. I switched diesel fuel from Irving fuel to CN Brown B5 BIO deisel, added two stroke oil to my fuel along with power service. My milage went from the low 12's to 16.2. Winter diesel fuel bad!!!!!!!!
