I have seen first gen turbos that worn out from normal use and running dirty air filters...I wouldn't be that concerned based on just the turbo pic.

What I've learned in 3 years of working for a rice farmer is that force induction engine don't like mud. We use big 9000 series John deeres with steel lateral wheels to stomp the rice. I've rapped the air box access with and old inner tube. After I silconed the lid. Then I wrapped the intake screen which is 15ft up in the air with a baffle to keep splashing water from directly hitting the opening. Well all this prevention would still let water in. The huge outer filter would weigh probably 70 lbs, along with being mud half way around. And it would be damp everywhere else. Then the inner filter would be damp as well. But there would still be some stuff that got by. The compressor fins would be coated in a dust/mud vapor film.
So pretty much think of the intake on your turbo diesel rig as a big vacume cleaner. It will pull in harder than you think. I try not to splash mud when I go bombing down a rice fiield road when it's wet. And I like you airbox idea. Every little bit of baffling helps in that application.
