I would....for the xtra $250, well worth it and you shouldn't ever have to worry about it again (SHOULDN'T)

x2. if you plan on running how you have been when you popped the gasket, i would definatly o ring it or you will have more money in head gaskets than what it cost to do it. i went through 3 head gaskets (2 in less than a month) before i had it oringed.

Negative,im out of money and dont have time to wait on the machine shop...ive always wanted a boreing head for my mill so maybe down the road I'll research how to do it right myself and get the boreing head to do it.I got a nice 10" rotary table but this head is way to long to make a rotation on the table.

I bet I could build tool to do the ring groove,I machined my own injection line removal tool to pull the lines at the pump...worked good! 8)

Then later I can have my old head ported and polished, decked and ringed the gaskets arent to expensive. Then slap on my new H.P. head on the engine if im lookin for more power or a project.

But right now I just need to get this truck put back together so I can get to workin on my rock buggy thing and have it ready for Moab the end of March.

I KNOW this is great advice and do appreciate it guys, truley DO! im going to put this new head on with ther ARP's tune her down just a bit for my trip to Moab.

I really want to put a differant cam in it...im sure with the lack of ZDDP in the oil these days the cam is showin some wear,at this time will be a great time to have the other head ported, decked and ringed then get back to pumpin this rig up some more...its so addicting isnt it lol

So the heads off,This engine has 310k on it and it has a perfect cross hatch pattern on all 6 cylinders still  is this common? to have NO cylinder wear @ this mileage?

So whats this yellow chalk lookin stuff?

Its crazy to me that this all the air this engine gets through this weee lil air horn...
Do we see a HP increase swapping this for say a 24 valve unit?

LOL...that's the bowl that the boom actually takes place in

Cross-hatch....yep normal, when you don't have it anymore it's not good. I got a 2 cylinders that don't look brand new anymore.

As far as the yellow??????????????? Maybe it's a water/meth thing.

 The head swap is not going so well!

I bought a loaded ready to install head.I oticed one of the intake valve keepers wernt seated correctly...I just happen to have a valve spring compressor Ibought at a yard sale a few years back so...

The keeper has a bur on the inside of it so thats why it wont allow the vlave cap to seat.Upon further inspection I notice theres MASSIVE casting burs and metal and grit stuff everywhere inside this head! :x I'll post some pics.So I spent my only day off breaking this head sown and I went in and cleaned up all the casting flash? whatever you call it,smoothed out the exhaust ports and water galleys. Then I went a head and numbvered all the valves and lapped them in with some lapping compound and a lil suction cup hand lapper and put it all back together.

So now im right back where I started...but at least I know what I have and can trust my engine is not going to get filled with CRAP!

If I had not noticed that retainer,if that retainer wasnt screwed I may have not checked the inside of this head! my motor would get filled with metal and grit sthi from the casting.

I recall an old saying..."trust but verify!"

I finally got some pics uploaded.I got all the ARP head studs set now,had to bottom tap all the block holes to get the ARP's to set at the required heighth.Im ready to start maching the rocker holder now...

Heres some pics of that new head I bought.
At least they put in the nice steam seals.
Image
The pics dont show it that well, can you see the casting lip in the runner
Image
Image
All the exhaust ports had this step machined in them, big sharp edge!
Image
I knocked that off there.
Image
later I came back in there and blended that in real nice and smooth.
All the holes had some very sharp jagged edges behind the valve seats,I cleaned them up and rounded the under side of them.
Image
Then I went in and hand lapped all the valves in,a comparison the left one is lapped...
