Mark 12 gallons of oil from cal. to NE.? That baby is hurtin !!!! I had a 64 289 ford back in the day that went through 17qts. in 400miles so I started running 80-90 gear oil in it it stayed in a little longer!!!! not alot though. but it never quit me.

If there ever were a chance for an engine to "runaway on engine oil" this was the chance to do it.
All it ever did was smoke very blue after coasting down a steep grade and getting back into the throttle.
It was bad enough that if it were a gasser, it would have fouled spark plugs.

I think the lack of compression kept it from going runaway on me.

I also think the hard starting is a combination of low compression and oil in the pistons that doesn't burn as readily, which is why it takes a buttload of cranking to get it to fire off.
