Postby skilletky » Sun May 15, 2011 9:15 pm

if you noticed the oil psi gauge and the pressure drop, you are very observant. what would cause this? the sending unit is a brand new autozone unit, never did this with the mechanical gauge. crappy sending unit?

You're a brave man to be holding anything but the steering wheel with both hands in a 1st gen at that speed.

I'd just give the connector a good wiggling, it may have hit a vibration it didn't like up there and started getting a spotty contact.

Why'd you pull the mechanical gauge? I've just got everything together to put another OP gauge in mine. I don't trust the factory one at all. It seems to just pick a spot on the gauge at random and sit there no matter what.

What oil filter do you run? I have seen some filters cause a loss in oil pressure at higher rpms on the 5.9's. It is not uncommon to see 80psi at 2500rpm and 45psi at 5000 on the pulling engines on the engine dyno.

It actually drives and handles pretty good at high speeds, I've been spending a bunch of money on the front end getting it in good shape. I am gonna throw another mechanical guage in there, the other one took a crap on me. I run a fleetguard lf 3894 filter and sometimes a k&n oil filter. It turned out to be the sending unit, I had to go to ohio yesterday to get some parts from the detroit dealer. On the way back the guage dropped to zero, I about had a heart attack. I shut it down and pulled over, I pulled over and started it, again no pressure at the guage. Wiggle the sending unit and it started working fine. Ran it up to 100 plus and it never droppes till I hit a bump, then it dropped to nothing. BIG releaf!

I finally got around to installing my oil pressure gauge tonight. Its at 75-80PSI cold and 50-60 going down the road at 55+ and 15-20PSI at idle hot.

Dodges of this era (and newer) have a problem with the solder joints on the back of the printed circuit board where the pins are soldered on for the connector. Most times if you pull the cluster, and look around the base of the pins, you can see where the solder has broken loose. Most times, you can just reheat, and melt the solder back together. Worst case, add a lil solder and be done with it.
